Signs Your Garage Door Spring Needs Attention
Changes in door weight, travel, or opener behaviour can be useful clues when a garage door spring system is not working normally.
A door that suddenly feels heavy
Garage door springs help counterbalance the door's weight. When that support changes, the door can feel much heavier than normal, travel unevenly, or put extra strain on the opener. A heavy door does not identify the exact failed part by itself, but it is an important detail to share.
Changes in normal travel
Pay attention to whether the door lifts partway, stops early, moves more slowly than usual, or sounds different during a normal cycle. If a visible gap appears in a torsion spring, keep clear of the hardware and avoid trying to adjust it. Spring components are under tension.
Avoid forcing the opener
An opener is designed to move a properly balanced door. Repeatedly running it against a door that is unusually heavy can make the situation harder to assess. If the door is not moving normally, stop using it and note its current position.
What to do next
Describe what changed, when it started, and whether the door can still move. For more on the commercial repair path, see Garage Door Spring Repair. You can also read what to do when a spring breaks before contacting the service team.
