What To Do When a Garage Door Cable Comes Off
A loose or displaced garage door cable can affect door movement. Learn what to avoid and what details to share.
Leave the cable alone
Garage door cables connect to other load-bearing parts of the system. If a cable looks loose, frayed, or out of its normal path, do not attempt to rewind, reattach, or tension it yourself. The door may also be uneven or out of alignment.
Stop using the opener
Avoid running the opener if a cable is visibly displaced or the door is not travelling evenly. Continuing to move the door can put additional stress on rollers, tracks, and other connected components.
Note the door's current condition
Describe whether the door is fully closed, partway open, crooked, or stuck. From a safe distance, note whether you can see a cable off its normal route, a roller outside the track, or a new sound during travel.
